WEX Europe Services’ hikers tackle Yorkshire Three Peaks in bid to raise money for mental health charity Mind

28th June 2017

More than £2,000 has been raised for charity by WEX Europe Services after a team completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.

Twenty-three walkers finished the 24-mile challenge, scaling Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, crossing the finish line within the 12-hour time limit; unfortunately, injuries forced four members to finish their hike prematurely, but, collectively, it was a tremendous effort by all involved.

The trek was organised in aid of Mind. The charity provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. It campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.

Marketing Projects Manager, Andrew Weston, who helped to organise fundraiser revealed the reasons behind supporting Mind: “WEX Europe Services asked all members of staff to nominate a charity, and while all were noble causes, Mind was the clear choice.

“We were proud to be walking for such an inspiring cause – despite the grim weather!”

The group faced tough conditions throughout, as rain and wind swept through them and slowed progress; however, despite the inclement weather, Andrew said spirits remained high and he enjoyed walking with colleagues, who swapped suits and high heels for waterproofs and walking boots for a second time.

“A group of us successfully tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks last year, in aid of Diabetes UK, and were determined to return and repeat the feat – we even welcomed a few more members!”

On attempting a hat-trick of Yorkshire Three Peak challenges, Andrew revealed, while possible, he was tempted to scale even higher:

“Both Yorkshire Three Peak challenges have been successful, with lots of money raised so far, but I am excited to up the ante. We’re keeping next year’s challenge under wraps until nearer the time; however, I’m sure the event will give us another opportunity to raise money for a great charity.”
