What is telematics?

Telematics is a fleet manager’s best friend! It is a common misconception that telematics is simply vehicle tracking but it is so much more than that. Fleet telematics provides insight and data that can help take your fleet to the next level by improving vehicle and driver performance as well as reducing fuel costs.

WEX Telematics allows you to:

How telematics helps fleet management

Fleet managers are usually responsible for a number of drivers and vehicles. This responsibility comes with a lot of pressure; pressure to ensure that they’re getting the most out of their assets.

Whilst the role of a fleet manager will vary from company to company, their concerns will generally stay the same. Here are some of the ways in which WEX Telematics can help fleet managers overcome these worries:

Better vehicle and driver safety

WEX Telematics gives each driver a performance score based on stats such as speeding and harsh braking/acceleration. The overall score as well as the breakdown in each category gives you insight into how safe your drivers are being on the road. If someone is putting themselves and company property in danger then you can see exactly where and when. WEX Telematics is integrated with Google Maps and allows you to see the exact location where the incident occurred as well as recording the speed of the vehicle.

Reduce fuel costs

Cutting out behaviour such as speeding and harsh acceleration will also help you cut fuel costs by improving fuel efficiency. These inefficient methods of driving are as wasteful as they are dangerous. Each driver receives a score based on driving performance so as well as improving safety on the road, WEX Telematics can also inspire healthy competition whereby drivers compete to be crowned the best driver. As drivers compete to improve their score, their safer driving style will save you money on fuel costs.

Improve the efficiency of your fleet

Ensure that you’re taking the most efficient routes available in order to get to your customers as soon as possible. Plan every journey with live traffic updates to ensure that you spend as little time as possible stuck in traffic. You can send your customer a tracker link so that they know when the driver will be arriving. Driver timesheets show you when each vehicle was turned on and off as well as the total mileage recorded allowing you to ensure all drivers are working their appropriate hours and reduce vehicle idle time.

Prevent vehicle misuse

When responsible for expensive equipment, you want to make sure that it is safe and not being misused. WEX Telematics’ ‘geofencing’ feature allows you to set up a virtual boundary around a vehicle. Should it leave this area, you will be immediately notified via the mobile app. Similarly, you can set ‘working hours’ and be notified if any vehicle is activated out of hours. The live maps feature provides real time vehicle tracking meaning you always know where your vehicles are.

Additional features of WEX Telematics

Telematics Mobile App

Fleet managers can use the free WEX Telematics mobile app to manage their fleet on the go. Get immediate access to all of the same data and insight that is available on the desktop version. Receive push notifications on a range of customisable incidents. Want to know if a specific vehicle leaves its work area or if a certain driver is speeding? Receive live updates to your phone to ensure that you always have the latest information on your fleet.

Dashcam

The dashcam records HD quality footage that gives you and your drivers further protection when out on the road. The dashcam will automatically download any high-threshold driver performance events to the web portal which allows you to see exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the incident. If a driver is claiming that their harsh braking was the result of a negligent road user then you are able to check the footage and see what happened. Each unit is available at an upfront cost followed by a monthly subscription.
